Walking in Shakespeare’s Footsteps
May 11 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
£8.00
Thursday 11 May, 7pm Walking in Shakespeare’s Footsteps: An historic journey through Amersham. Talk by Nick Gammage. £8 including wine/soft alternative.
Around 1585 William Shakespeare – then just 21 – set out from his Stratford home for a new life in the London playhouses leaving behind a wife and three young children – a historic journey that may well have taken him the streets of Tudor Amersham.
There have been many theories about why when and how Shakespeare left home, and the route he took, but – like so much in the Bard’s life – it has remained a huge mystery.
Using old charts and other evidence from the time, Amersham Museum trustee Nick Gammage has pieced together the most likely route. And in May he will be walking alone in Shakespeare’s footsteps along those medieval tracks from Stratford to The Globe Theatre on London’s South Bank.
Nick’s walk marks the 400th anniversary this year of publication in 1623 of the First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays , one of the most important – and valuable – books ever written in English.
Nick will be sharing some of the fascinating things his research has uncovered about Shakespeare’s life in London and the places he passed through – including a little-known link between Shakespeare and Chesham Bois!
An experienced long-distance walker with a deep interest in ancient trackways, Nick has been featured in Clare Balding’s BBC Radio 4 series, “Ramblings”.
He is raising funds for Amersham Museum through his walk, to contribute, please click on the link below:
