SUMMARY:Guided Tudor Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join a guided Tudor Walk to learn about life – and death – in 16th century Amersham \n\nFood and drink\nMarkets and fairs\nBuildings and burgage plots\nClothing and work\nHealth and cures\nReligious beliefs and the Lollard martyrs\n\nThese walks are led by guides in Tudor costume and start from the museum at 2.30pm on the last Saturday in each month (April to September).  \nThe walk visits the church (weddings permitting!) then leaves the town and follows field paths. It includes a steady climb\, which is taken slowly. Baby buggies have successfully managed the route and we did once get a mobility buggy up the hill! Be warned\, if you pay for parking\, that the walk usually lasts about 2¼ hours. It is possible to take a short cut near the end\, which saves perhaps 15 minutes (most people don’t). \nWe strongly recommending booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks. While we will do our best to accommodate people on the day\, places are subject to availability. \n  \nNotes\nIf you would like to visit the museum on the same day as your walk\, this is possible from 11:30am before the walk starts\, but there is not time after the walk finishes. \nIf you have queries about accessibility or routes\, please get in touch and we would be happy to provide you with detailed information. \nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. SUMMARY:An Italian in England: A Musical Tribute to Francesco Ticciati (1893–1949)
DESCRIPTION:St Mary’s Church\, Old Amersham \nSoprano Betty Makharinsky and pianist Pavel Timofeyevsky present a musical homage to the life and legacy of the Italian-born composer\, pianist\, teacher and musical pioneer Francesco Ticciati. \nFrancesco Ticciati\nBorn in Rome in 1893\, Ticciati settled in Britain during the 1920s\, building a distinguished career as a performer\, lecturer \nand composer. He appeared at the Proms\, became a British citizen in 1936\, and during the Second World War devoted himself to bringing music and encouragement to servicemen through concerts and lectures. In his later years he made his home in Amersham\, where he fostered a thriving musical community through his concerts\, teaching and tireless advocacy for the arts. \nThis programme traces the story of an “Italian in England” through music that shaped Ticciati’s life and career. Alongside songs by Ticciati himself are works by Sir Paolo Tosti\, another Italian musician who found a second home in Britain\, together with songs by Bellini and Rossini\, celebrating the rich tradition of Italian song. Piano works by Scarlatti and Chopin recall repertoire frequently featured in Ticciati’s own recitals\, while music by Mozart and Beethoven reflects the broader European tradition that formed the foundation of his musical world. \nThe programme also honours the wartime spirit of music-making through Myra Hess’s celebrated transcriptions of Bach\, evoking the courage\, resilience and solace that music brought to Britain during the darkest years of the twentieth century. \nPart concert\, part musical portrait\, this evening celebrates the life of a remarkable musician whose journey from Rome to Amersham left an enduring mark on British musical life.

A Biology graduate of Oxford University with a Ph. D. in wheat genetics\, Karen was Head of Education at Cambridge University Botanic Garden for several years\, and has worked with people of many ages from diverse backgrounds. \nThese days\, Karen works with the Field Studies Council\, where she writes and delivers botany courses and hosts school visits at FSC Amersham Field Centre. She also trains volunteer botanical surveyors for the Chilterns NL Tracking the Impact project\, tutors on the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI) Identiplant course\, and gives talks to a range of groups. Karen volunteers with her local environment group and helps coordinate the Central Chilterns Botany Group. \nWe strongly recommend booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks.
