SUMMARY:Chairmaking at Amersham Museum
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Chilterns Chair Festival\nTraditional green woodworking techniques are central to the history of the Chilterns\, where bodgers set up workshops in the woods\, making chair components from the abundant beech and ash that grew in the area. \nThese traditions influenced later generations of chairmakers\, including greenwoodworkers in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. In turn\, their skills and techniques inspired makers such as Jennie Alexander\, whose influential book Make a Chair from a Tree\, first published in 1978\, helped reintroduce green woodworking to a wider audience. \nThe book sparked renewed interest in a craft with deep roots in the Chilterns and encouraged an exchange of ideas across the Atlantic that continues today. \nEd and Graham from London Green Wood will demonstrate techniques that would have been familiar to 19th-century bodgers as they create the components for a Jennie Alexander chair over the course of two days at the Amersham Museum. \n  \nBio:\nLondon Green Wood is a members-run co-operative of green woodworkers based in Hackney. The journey then moves closer to our own era with a look at handwritten recipes once used in Haddon’s Pharmacy\, offering a fascinating glimpse into Amersham’s evolving medical traditions. \nWeather permitting\, the event will start in the garden with drinks and an introduction\, followed by an illustrated talk in the first-floor Woodcock Room. \nNotes\nThe Woodcock Room can be accessed by a platform lift. SUMMARY:An Italian in England: A Musical Tribute to Francesco Ticciati (1893–1949)
DESCRIPTION:St Mary’s Church\, Old Amersham \nSoprano Betty Makharinsky and pianist Pavel Timofeyevsky present a musical homage to the life and legacy of the Italian-born composer\, pianist\, teacher and musical pioneer Francesco Ticciati. \nFrancesco Ticciati\nBorn in Rome in 1893\, Ticciati settled in Britain during the 1920s\, building a distinguished career as a performer\, lecturer \nand composer. He appeared at the Proms\, became a British citizen in 1936\, and during the Second World War devoted himself to bringing music and encouragement to servicemen through concerts and lectures. In his later years he made his home in Amersham\, where he fostered a thriving musical community through his concerts\, teaching and tireless advocacy for the arts. \nThis programme traces the story of an “Italian in England” through music that shaped Ticciati’s life and career. Alongside songs by Ticciati himself are works by Sir Paolo Tosti\, another Italian musician who found a second home in Britain\, together with songs by Bellini and Rossini\, celebrating the rich tradition of Italian song. Piano works by Scarlatti and Chopin recall repertoire frequently featured in Ticciati’s own recitals\, while music by Mozart and Beethoven reflects the broader European tradition that formed the foundation of his musical world. \nThe programme also honours the wartime spirit of music-making through Myra Hess’s celebrated transcriptions of Bach\, evoking the courage\, resilience and solace that music brought to Britain during the darkest years of the twentieth century. \nPart concert\, part musical portrait\, this evening celebrates the life of a remarkable musician whose journey from Rome to Amersham left an enduring mark on British musical life.

DESCRIPTION:Monday 9 November\, 7pm – 8.30pm \nAmersham Museum \n£13 including glass of wine or soft drink. \n \nOn 9 November 1966\, local GP Dr Helen Davidson was murdered in Hodgemoor Woods. On the exact date of the 60th anniversary of the unsolved crime\, this talk looks at Helen Davidson’s life before the tragic murder\, the murder and how it was reported\, the possible suspects and the murder’s long term effect on policing in Buckinghamshire. Speaker Pete Healy was a 16-year-old teenager in Amersham at the time of the murder. \nNotes \nThe talk will be in the Museum’s Woodcock Room which on the first floor\, accessed by a platform lift. SUMMARY:Talk: Sainsbury’s - a Family\, a Grocer and a Social History since 1869
DESCRIPTION:Price including glass of wine or soft drink.\nIn 1869\, John and Mary Sainsbury opened their first shop in Drury Lane\, which was then one of London’s poorest areas\, selling butter\, milk and eggs. At a time of dubious safety practices\, their objective was “to sell the best butter in the world” with an insistence on high quality and standards\, combined with keenly competitive pricing. \nSince those humble beginnings\, Sainsbury’s has grown into one of our largest and most successful retailers with 23 million customers every week\, 150\,000 colleagues and a product range of tens of thousands of items. Yet the imperative of providing great quality food at fair prices remains as central to the company’s culture today as it was to John and Mary. \nTim Fallowfield OBE was born in Amersham in 1963 and some of his earliest memories are of his Mum taking him shopping in the Sainsbury’s counter shop at 5 Chiltern Parade\, Sycamore Rd\, which had opened in 1937. In 2001 Tim joined Sainsbury’s as General Counsel and Company Secretary and was a Board Director for 20 years until his retirement in 2024. \nTim became Chair of the Sainsbury Archive on his retirement\, having been one of the founding trustees when it was established as a charity in 2003. The Archive’s Collection is one of the leading business archives\, not only plotting the history of the company and grocery retailing\, but also providing an absorbing social history of Britain since Victorian times. More than 100\,000 items have been digitised on the Archive’s website( www.sainsburyarchive.org.uk). \nIn this talk\, Tim will weave these elements together\, and will explain how the Archive has worked together with the London Museum as it prepared for the opening of the new museum in the historic Smithfields Meat Market in November 2026. \nNotes\nThe talk will be in the Museum’s Woodcock Room which on the first floor\, accessed by a platform lift.
