SUMMARY:Straw plaiting beginners’ workshop
DESCRIPTION:Free (supported by Heritage Crafts)\nAmersham Museum\nMaximum 8 attendees \nStraw plaiting was once a common industry in Amersham and the surrounding area\, but is now a critically endangered heritage craft.  Join expert straw plaiter Veronica Main MBE to learn and develop your own straw plaiting skills in a day’s beginners’ workshop\, based at Amersham Museum.  \nAll workshop attendees will have materials and equipment supplied for the day\, and have the opportunity to buy additional materials for ongoing making. Workshop attendees will also have access to a specially set-up network for new and established makers\, to build their confidence\, share skills and communicate about their making.    \nWhat will I gain?\nThe repetitive movement of straw plaiting keeps fingers and mind nimble and with practice the length of plait grows quickly until you have enough to make a hat or bag\, or whatever you want – within reason! \nYou will be keeping alive these skills and honouring the memory of the talented people\, not only in and around Amersham but throughout the country who earned their living making plait to supply the milliners and hat factories. \nHow do I learn?\nThe workshops are aimed at adults or older children (minimum age 12 years\, must be accompanied by a paying adult) \nMore advanced courses to develop skills are planned for later in the year. \nThe work does require manual dexterity. \nTea and coffee will be supplied but please bring your own lunch. \nWho is the tutor?\nVeronica Main MBE. \nAwarded the MBE for her services to Straw Plaiting\, Veronica has been working with straw for over 40 years and is an experienced teacher. She has written two groundbreaking books that record straw work’s endangered skills. \nWhat shall I bring on the day?\nPair of small scissors \nNotebook and pen or pencil \nBag to take home your samples \nHow do I continue working at home?\nPlaiting straw and straw splitters will be supplied for the course but will also be available for purchase in the museum shop. \nIf you are interested but can’t attend the sessions listed\, please email info@amershammuseum.org to be added to the waiting list for any future sessions.

SUMMARY:Guided Tudor Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join a guided Tudor Walk to learn about life – and death – in 16th century Amersham \n\nFood and drink\nMarkets and fairs\nBuildings and burgage plots\nClothing and work\nHealth and cures\nReligious beliefs and the Lollard martyrs\n\nThese walks are led by guides in Tudor costume and start from the museum at 2.30pm on the last Saturday in each month (April to September).  \nThe walk visits the church (weddings permitting!) then leaves the town and follows field paths. It includes a steady climb\, which is taken slowly. Baby buggies have successfully managed the route and we did once get a mobility buggy up the hill! Be warned\, if you pay for parking\, that the walk usually lasts about 2¼ hours. \nWe strongly recommending booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks. While we will do our best to accommodate people on the day\, places are subject to availability. \nNotes\nIf you would like to visit the museum on the same day as your walk\, this is possible from 12noon before the walk starts\, but there is not time after the walk finishes. \nIf you have queries about accessibility or routes\, please get in touch and we would be happy to provide you with detailed information. \nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. SUMMARY:Rooted in the Land double bill film night
DESCRIPTION:Amersham Museum \n£10 including wine or soft drink \nJoin us to enjoy two short films that provide an insight into Amersham’s past\, inspired by our current Rooted in the Land exhibition. Excerpt from both films feature in the exhibition\, but this is your chance to watch the full versions.  Note that neither have sound tracks\, but we expect that the audience reactions and reflections may compensate for this! \nControversial today\, the Old Berkeley Hunt was a key part of local life for centuries. With the Old Berkeley Hunt documents the hounds\, horses\, foxes and riders in the early 1930s. \nStarting with herding pigs and ending with enjoying sausages for tea\, our 1950s promotional film for Brazil’s\, provides a comprehensive account of the iconic Amersham meat company. \nContent warning: these historical films include explicit scenes of butchery and fox hunting. Although the exhibition excerpts were edited to exclude the more explicit images\, this screening will show all of the original footage. \n  \nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. It is necessary for the museum to charge a cancellation fee of £1 to cover credit card and administration costs.

SUMMARY:Reminiscence Group
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our monthly reminiscence group where we share our stories and memories from the past. Everyone is welcome\, whether you are a long time Amersham resident\, new to the area\, or simply interested in meeting new people. We often look at objects from the museum’s collections to get us chatting\, talk about a particular theme\, or get involved in wider museum projects. These sessions are sociable\, stimulating and fun. \nThe sessions are free and last for around an hour and always include tea\, coffee and biscuits. \nYou are very welcome to bring a family member\, friend or carer. The sessions are held in our first floor room\, but there is lift access. Please get in touch if you have any queries 01494 723700 or info@amershammuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Walk - Midsomer Murders and More Accessible Walk
DESCRIPTION:Midsomer Murders and More Accessible Walk\nAmersham is a quintessentially Midsomer town and is used as a location in numerous episodes. Amersham also represents the perfect place to live in Midwich Cuckoos\, the perfect place to stay in Four Weddings and a Funeral and the perfect Cornish fishing village in My Cousin Rachel! \nOur walk is a one-mile circular guided walk designed to be as inclusive as possible and should be suitable for people with limited mobility and additional needs with their families. The route will be on the flat\, on roads and pavements (with some grass and unmade paths if sufficiently dry) around Amersham Old Town. The pace will be slow with stops for description. \nThe walk is likely to be suitable for wheelchairs/scooters – however if you are a wheelchair user planning to join\, or have any other support needs\, please contact walk leader Martin Pounce to discuss the walk so you can decide whether it is suitable for you\, and so that Martin can try to tailor the walk to your needs. Email martin.pounce@btinternet.com or call 07500 152 981. There are accessible toilets in the Church Rooms opposite the church. \nStarting point: Meeting at St Mary’s Parish Church\nWe strongly recommending booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks. While we will do our best to accommodate people on the day\, places are subject to availability. \nNote\nIf you have queries about accessibility or routes\, please get in touch and we would be happy to provide you with detailed information.\nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. It is necessary for the museum to charge a cancellation fee of £1 to cover credit card and administration costs.
