SUMMARY:Chairmaking at Amersham Museum
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Chilterns Chair Festival\nTraditional green woodworking techniques are central to the history of the Chilterns\, where bodgers set up workshops in the woods\, making chair components from the abundant beech and ash that grew in the area. \nThese traditions influenced later generations of chairmakers\, including greenwoodworkers in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. In turn\, their skills and techniques inspired makers such as Jennie Alexander\, whose influential book Make a Chair from a Tree\, first published in 1978\, helped reintroduce green woodworking to a wider audience. \nThe book sparked renewed interest in a craft with deep roots in the Chilterns and encouraged an exchange of ideas across the Atlantic that continues today. \nEd and Graham from London Green Wood will demonstrate techniques that would have been familiar to 19th-century bodgers as they create the components for a Jennie Alexander chair over the course of two days at the Amersham Museum. \n  \nBio:\nLondon Green Wood is a members-run co-operative of green woodworkers based in Hackney. They have two outdoor workshops and regularly run courses in green woodwork and basket weaving. www.londongreenwood.com \n

SUMMARY:Plants and Places; an Amersham amble
DESCRIPTION:Karen in museum garden\nIn partnership with Wild Amersham join local botanist Karen van Oostrum for a gentle walk along the Misbourne chalk stream\, through St Mary’s churchyard\, and down the High Street of Old Amersham. \n\nDiscover the plants that grow on your doorstep\nLearn about the chalk streams\, geography and history of your local landscape\nFind out how key local industries have changed over the years\nEnjoy comparing historic images with what you see in Old Amersham today\n\nThis is the third of 4 walks in this series\, taking place in winter\, spring\, summer and autumn. Each walk follows the same route\, helping us to notice the seasonal changes as we progress through the year.  Note that the walk isn’t aimed specifically at families\, but children are welcome if they have an interest in local wildlife and history\, and would enjoy a walk packed full of information. \nKaren has a love of plants and the environment\, and enjoys sharing this with others\, through courses and guided walks. A Biology graduate of Oxford University with a Ph. D. in wheat genetics\, Karen was Head of Education at Cambridge University Botanic Garden for several years\, and has worked with people of many ages from diverse backgrounds. \nThese days\, Karen works with the Field Studies Council\, where she writes and delivers botany courses and hosts school visits at FSC Amersham Field Centre. She also trains volunteer botanical surveyors for the Chilterns NL Tracking the Impact project\, tutors on the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI) Identiplant course\, and gives talks to a range of groups. Karen volunteers with her local environment group and helps coordinate the Central Chilterns Botany Group. \nWe strongly recommend booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks. While we will do our best to accommodate people on the day\, places are subject to availability. \n \n  \nNotes \nIf you would like to visit the museum on the same day as your walk\, this is possible after the walk as it is open until 4.30pm. \nIf you have queries about accessibility or routes\, please get in touch and we would be happy to provide you with detailed information. \nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. SUMMARY:Guided Tudor Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join a guided Tudor Walk to learn about life – and death – in 16th century Amersham \n\nFood and drink\nMarkets and fairs\nBuildings and burgage plots\nClothing and work\nHealth and cures\nReligious beliefs and the Lollard martyrs\n\nThese walks are led by guides in Tudor costume and start from the museum at 2.30pm on the last Saturday in each month (April to September).  \nThe walk visits the church (weddings permitting!) then leaves the town and follows field paths. It includes a steady climb\, which is taken slowly. Baby buggies have successfully managed the route and we did once get a mobility buggy up the hill! Be warned\, if you pay for parking\, that the walk usually lasts about 2¼ hours. It is possible to take a short cut near the end\, which saves perhaps 15 minutes (most people don’t). \nWe strongly recommending booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks. While we will do our best to accommodate people on the day\, places are subject to availability. \nNotes\nIf you would like to visit the museum on the same day as your walk\, this is possible from 11:30am before the walk starts\, but there is not time after the walk finishes. \nIf you have queries about accessibility or routes\, please get in touch and we would be happy to provide you with detailed information. \nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets.
