DESCRIPTION:Our craft workshops form part of the events programme linked to our Land Marks exhibition. Thanks to the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust for enabling us to offer these sessions at subsidised rates.  \nAs part of our Land Marks Exhibition\, we are offering a fun Art Workshop for Children celebrating the modern architecture of Amersham (the ‘Sun Houses’ designed by Connell and Ward in the 1930’s).  We will be inspired by Fiona Ryan-Watson’s painting “Amersham Rising” which will be on display as part of this Exhibition. \nWe will be using ‘magic sprinkle dust’ (brusho) to create a vibrant background and then designing a funky modern building to sit in the centre of the piece.  Each child will create their very own artwork to bring home.  This workshop will be led by local artist Fiona Ryan-Watson. \nFor children 6-10 years old.  \n  \nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. Paul is a watercolour artist from the local area who does lively scenes of local high streets and natural scenes that inspire him. Paul will take you through various steps using video and personal demonstrations. You will work from sketches and photos so bring some items with you for inspiration. You will learn tips and short cuts and be taught by an experienced artist. Basic materials will be provided\, but do bring your own if you have them available. \n \nSuitable for intermediate or beginner level. \n

DESCRIPTION:(Including glass of wine or soft drink) \nAs recently as the early 1900’s\, you didn’t need to venture far out of London to find open fields. Areas like Wembley and Harrow were undeveloped. Familiar names on the Tube Map today\, were small isolated towns or villages. \nWhat we now know as Old Amersham is long established having been mentioned as Agmodesham in the Domesday Book. But\, prior to the railways arrival\, there were only a scattering of buildings in what is now Amersham-on-the-Hill\, Chesham Bois and Amersham Common\, with even less at Little Chalfont. Their development came about due to an early twentieth century phenomenon\, Metro-land or as we now know it Metroland. \nCopies of our new book signed by the contributors\, All Aboard to Amersham will be for sale at the event\, alternatively buy a combined talk plus book ticket and get the book for £7.50\, normal price £8.50. \nJoin Ralph Hilsdon\, museum volunteer and railway historian\, to explore the story of the impact that the development of the railway had on Amersham and the surrounding area. \n  \n  \nPlease make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. DESCRIPTION:Karen in museum garden\nIn partnership with Wild Amersham join local botanist Karen van Oostrum for a gentle walk along the Misbourne chalk stream\, through St Mary’s churchyard\, and down the High Street of Old Amersham. \n\nDiscover the plants that grow on your doorstep\nLearn about the chalk streams\, geography and history of your local landscape\nFind out how key local industries have changed over the years\nEnjoy comparing historic images with what you see in Old Amersham today\n\nThis is the first of 4 walks in this series\, taking place in winter\, spring\, summer and autumn. Each walk follows the same route\, helping us to notice the seasonal changes as we progress through the year.  Note that the walk isn’t aimed specifically at families\, but children are welcome if they have an interest in local wildlife and history\, and would enjoy a walk packed full of information. \nKaren has a love of plants and the environment\, and enjoys sharing this with others\, through courses and guided walks. A Biology graduate of Oxford University with a Ph. D. in wheat genetics\, Karen was Head of Education at Cambridge University Botanic Garden for several years\, and has worked with people of many ages from diverse backgrounds. \nThese days\, Karen works with the Field Studies Council\, where she writes and delivers botany courses and hosts school visits at FSC Amersham Field Centre. She also trains volunteer botanical surveyors for the Chilterns NL Tracking the Impact project\, tutors on the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI) Identiplant course\, and gives talks to a range of groups. Karen volunteers with her local environment group and helps coordinate the Central Chilterns Botany Group. \nWe strongly recommend booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks. Local medical herbalist Kristine De Block invites you to an evening of tasting and storytelling that follows Valentine’s Day back to saints\, secret notes\, midwinter rituals about health\, luck\, and getting people safely through the dark of the year. \nFrom there we turn to the medicinal plants. You’ll explore some of the herbs people have reached for when the heart is in trouble – racing with nerves\, heavy with grief\, tangled up in love\, or simply too tired to care. Kristine will introduce a few classic “heart herbs”\, share the folklore and real stories wrapped around them\, and talk about simple preparations you can make in an ordinary kitchen. \nYou’ll go home with a very different sense of what Valentine’s Day can mean\, and a handful of herbal ideas to play with at home.
