| About this object | The door lock comes from a Metropolitan Railway T Stock (formerly MW stock) train, an electrified train built in 1926. Rapid population growth in London, congestion and inadequate public transport all contributed to the expansion of railway provision in the early twentieth century. A marketing strategy to promote Metro-Land (or Metroland as we now know it) was introduced. This scheme made use of the acres of land available along the Metropolitan Railway’s tracks to house future customers, promoting an idyllic rural lifestyle in beautiful homes within easy commuting reach of London. From the end of the First World War until the 1920s, Metro-land boomed, with “Live in Metro-Land" being a key slogan. |
