Amersham Museum is housed in a 16th Century building and as a result some of the floors are uneven, some ceilings are low, some rooms are different shapes and sizes, and some areas are not fully accessible.

Getting Around the Museum

GallerySite Access

  • Our main front entrance has a sliding door with one step down and a handrail.
  • For wheelchair users there is a second front door entrance which is fully accessible. Please ask our staff and they will be happy to assist you.
  • Access to the first floor is limited to only part of the museum; there is lift access and where this is not available, we have provided information about the exhibits.
  • The on-site toilet facilities are ‘more accessible’ and include folding grab rail and a baby-changing area.
  • Buggy access is restricted to the ground floor and our first floor Timeline Room via a lift. If you wish, our staff will help you store your buggy safely whilst you enjoy the museum.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome.

Tudor Gallery

Our museum has lots of family-friendly hands-on exhibitions and we encourage families to explore the galleries and object boxes and garden. 

 

  • Role play – around the museum there are costumes for dressing up and lots of hats to try on. Upstairs in the Tudor Gallery you can role play at the banquet table and dress up like a Tudor.
  • Trails – there is a Nature Trail around the museum and Town Trail. The stewards at the front desk are happy to help with them. 
  • Craft Cart – upstairs in the Timeline Gallery there is a craft cart full of activities and resources to use. Get creative and make something inspired by your visit.
  • Toys – in this room there are also some toy boxes ideal for toddlers to enjoy playing with.
  • Garden – please ask our friendly stewards for the Garden Toy Box. It’s full of traditional games and toys for you to enjoy.
  • Events – during Half Term and School Holidays we run family Create! Workshops. Please see the Events Diary for details and follow us on social media for posts of new events.

Neurodiversity

You can explore the museum in advance of your visit using our Visual Story .  These pages can also be printed and provided to you when you visit if required in advance.

 

Discovery BagSensory Kits

  • You can borrow one of our FREE SEND Discovery Bags. Please ask at the reception desk.
  • They include ear defenders, magnifying glass, fidget toys, torches and can be used how you would like to help you enjoy exploring the galleries.

  

Quiet Space

  • There is a Take a Break Box filled with books and puzzles. Please use this in the galleries or take it out into the garden if you need to find a tranquil space to rest and relax.

 

Visually impaired visitors

We are currently working on having our display information in audio and large print.  In the meantime, our knowledgeable stewards are happy to assist with your visit. 

 Lighting varies throughout the museum and some parts of the museum have low lighting and strip lighting which may appear to flicker.

 

Hearing impaired visitors

We have a hearing loop available at our reception; please ask our staff who will be happy to help.

 

GardenGarden

  • There is a peaceful garden with benches and a patio area for you to enjoy. There is lots to explore in our gardens – wander around the beds filled with traditional medicinal plants and herb varieties – visit the original ‘privy’ at the end of the garden – enjoy the tranquil flowing river Misbourne.  We also have a selection of garden toys and games to have fun with.
