| About this object | This photograph was taken by Peggy (Margaret) Harris and was kindly loaned to Amersham Museum in late 2024 for digitisation. Although from very different backgrounds, Marie-Louise, the wealthy Austrian and Czecho-Slovak national and Peggy Harris, the working-class Welsh mother, became close friends. They likely met whilst shopping at Chestnut Stores, close to their homes in Amersham Common, spending time together during the war and staying in contact afterwards. This intimate photograph, both in subject and scale (the original measuring only 5.5cm x 4.9cm), speaks to the strong connection between the two and was kept safely by Peggy’s daughter Beryl, who has strong, warm, memories of the artist. Marie-Louise completed a pastel portrait of Beryl in around 1940 when she was around 4 years old (Schlenker p.535)Although coming from aristocratic blood, Marie-Louise found kindship and friendship in people from all walks of life such as Peggy Harris and her family. |
