| About this object | This rare painting is one of just two known snowscapes painted by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky who is remembered primarily for her expressive portraiture. This painting is also one of two landscapes by the artist in Amersham Museum’s Collection. The Motesiczkys’ new home, Cornerways, on Chestnut Lane was situated within uninterrupted nature. Dotted hedges, trees, fields and gardens offer a window into the quietness and relative safety of Amersham Common during the winter in wartime Britain. The destruction and enduring danger of the Blitz made Amersham’s idyllic setting attractive. Dominated by a thick blanket of muddied snow which masks the unmade Chestnut Lane and with no streetlights or people shown, the painting carries none of the horrors of the time. It could be timeless. The painting is the view from a front window of Cornerways, with the wooden gate in the foreground across Chestnut Lane to the Elangeni Estate and the fields of Chestnut Farm.
