Destination Amersham

Temporary exhibition
Saturday 28 February 2026 to Sunday 12 July 2026
Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Gallery
People have chosen to settle in Amersham and the surrounding area for over 2,000 years. But why? From ‘aliens’ required to pay tax in the 15th century, to recent refugees from war-torn countries, Amersham and the surrounding area has a long history in welcoming people from all backgrounds. The rural landscape, a location close to the capital, transport links, natural resources, education and job opportunities have all played their part. Explore objects, photographs and artworks that tell stories about the fascinating people and diverse communities that have called Amersham home

Discover our Story Tree, a collaborative installation by local artist Harsha Basu. Drawing on Harsha’s expertise in traditional Indian Madhubani art, over 70 contributors – including Amersham Polish School students, the local Indian community, school children and Museum volunteers – handcrafted these vibrant flowers, leaves and birds.

Each piece was painted using eco-friendly pigments made from clay, turmeric and beetroot. Attached luggage labels offer personal glimpses into every creator’s Destination Amersham journey. Perhaps you’d like to share your own?
