Chilterns & Thames Valley: secrets and surprises

July 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

£10.00
Slow Chilterns 2 cover

Amersham Museum

£10 including wine or soft drink

For all its charm, beauty and historic importance, the Chilterns remains an underrated part of Britain. Local authors Helen and Neil Matthews were delighted to write the Chilterns’ first full-length guidebook from a mainstream publisher in many years – and they included part of the Thames Valley and the Vale of Aylesbury for good measure. In this talk, Helen and Neil will reveal some of their favourite things and places – and some facts that may surprise you. Where can you get a red kite kite? Where did the Queen of Albania get her hair done? And where is the Chilterns’ only cathedral? Come and find out the answers!

About Helen and Neil Matthews

Helen and Neil MatthewsHelen and Neil Matthews have lived in the heart of the Chilterns for more than 30 years. Helen was born in Amersham: her family ties to the area go back for centuries. She is the Chair (and a founder member) of a local conservation charity and a member of the Chiltern Society’s Heritage Group. Neil’s 25 years in marketing includes stints with local charities in Aylesbury and Saunderton. As well as writing both editions of Bradt’s The Chilterns and the Thames Valley (Slow Travel), Helen and Neil have also written Bradt’s Heritage Weekends: 52 Breaks Exploring Britain’s past and updated Bradt’s Freedom Pass London. Both hold PhDs in history, and Pen & Sword has published book versions of their doctoral research.

Copies of the new edition of Bradt’s The Chilterns and the Thames Valley (Slow Travel) will be available for purchase at the event, with the opportunity for Helen and Neil to sign them.

Please make sure you have checked details before ordering tickets. It is necessary for the museum to charge a cancellation fee of £1 to cover credit card and administration costs.

“A well-run, informative and interesting small museum on the main street. It’s mostly volunteer-run and they do a great job in keeping it and making you feel welcome…Check out the herb garden too.”

“Enjoyable film and television location guided walk around Amersham hosted by Amersham Museum – here are the Sun Houses on Highover Park and further up the hill is High & Over.”
