GUIDED WALKS

Walk through Amersham’s history!  Join our experienced guides to explore the town, find out about past inhabitants, and discover its fascinating buildings. Tickets are £6 for adults, children aged under 18 free.

We strongly recommending booking your tickets in advance to guarantee your place on our walks. While we will do our best to accommodate people on the day, places are subject to availability.

Please note that if you would like to visit the museum on the same day as one of our afternoon walks, this is possible from 12noon before the walk starts, but there is not time after the walk finishes.

Our walks include uneven surfaces, cobbles and country paths. If you have queries about accessibility or routes, please get in touch and we would be happy to provide you with detailed information.

Guided Town Walks

Join a guided walk of Amersham Old Town for a fascinating insight into the history of the town, its inhabitants and its development. Here you will see many of the details of the town that you may never have noticed before.

There are two versions of the Town Walk, held on alternate Sundays (April to October).

EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF AMERSHAM

  • Early history of Amersham
  • Local patronage and its influence
  • Parish church and its rectors
  • Brewery and the maltings
  • Town Mill and the Charter Fair
  • 17th century & Victorian almshouses

LATER EXPANSION OF OLD AMERSHAM

  • The workhouses of Amersham
  • Coaching inns and 18th and 19th century travel
  • Social housing
  • Cottage industries
  • Post War development:
    • Brazils factory to Tesco
    • Gas Works to offices
    • Bus Garage to retirement homes
    • Workhouse to hospital

Both walks are 1.5 to 2 hours in duration. The walks leave from the museum at 2.30pm on Sundays.

Guided Tudor Walk

Join a guided Tudor Walk to learn about life – and death – in 16th century Amersham

  • Food and drink
  • Markets and fairs
  • Buildings and burgage plots
  • Clothing and work
  • Health and cures
  • Religious beliefs and the Lollard martyrs

These walks are led by guides in Tudor costume and start from the museum at 2.30pm on the last Saturday in each month (April to September).

The walk visits the church (weddings permitting!) then leaves the town and follows field paths. It includes a steady climb, which is taken slowly. Baby buggies have successfully managed the route and we did once get a mobility buggy up the hill! Be warned, if you pay for parking, that the walk usually lasts about 2¼ hours.

Amersham Film and TV locations

Our proximity to Pinewood Studios and the charm of Amersham and surrounding villages has made the area a popular location for the British Film Industry from the earliest days to the present.

In 1919, Wilfred Noy directed As He was Born, a silent comedy lasting 56minutes. The film has not survived but photographs taken by George Ward show a temporary statue of Anthony Mapletoft JP, Mayor of the fictitious town of Umberminster next to our Market Hall.

In 1959 the area around the Market Hall served as a French town, site of a spooky chase in Circus of Horrors and a Miss Marple film, Murder at the Gallop starring Margaret Rutherford was filmed here in 1960. Both the Crown Hotel and the King’s Arms featured in Oscar nominated Four Weddings and Funeral (1994). The first episode of Midsomer Murders, The Killings at Badger’s Drift, used Amersham’s historic High Street in 1997, and film crews have returned regularly. The 100th episode, The Killings of Copenhagen was filmed in The Maltings – as well as in Denmark! A recent episode, Last Man Out, was filmed in High and Over, the first Modernist house built in England. That building featured in Pathé News shortly after it was built in 1931. It is perfect for setting a thirties scene in Poirot and conveying luxury. In 2017 it was used as a location in The Time of their Lives. Amersham was the ideal town for bringing up families in The Midwich Cuckoos (2022).

Midsomer Murders and More takes visitors to all these locations and more, in a circular five-mile walk which includes a short detour in the meadow alongside the River Misbourne before returning to the station via High and Over.

For all walks pre-booking is recommended.

The museum welcomes pre-arranged walks for groups outside normal museum opening hours, during the day or in the evening. Special walks for groups or schools can be organised at any time of the year.

Self-Guided Walks

We’re delighted to offer self-guided walks of the local area, designed by our volunteers. Produced with the support of the Rothschild Foundation and the Amersham Community Board, the walks include the Chess Valley, a country walk from Chalfont & Latimer station to Amersham station and a walk following drovers’ routes. Download the walks here or buy a hard copy in the museum.
