Rehearsal Diaries

In the ten years since I last took part in a production of the Martyrs of Amersham, I had almost forgotten just how much fun rehearsals could be.

We began on week one with learning about what life would have been like in Tudor Amersham – and then turning what we had learnt into a Horrible Histories style sketch. In week two, we had a chance to choose names for our characters from Amersham’s tithe roster, and to think about who they might be – their trade, their status in life – and how that would affect their bearing as they moved through the town.

Week three, after a learning about the layout of the town and some of its key buildings, we had a chance to ‘speed date’ the other characters in the room and begin to work out our relationship with them. Who do we trust? Who are we suspicious of? Who are our friends and who are our rivals?

For those trying out for scripted roles in a few weeks’ time, things may start to get a little more serious. But for now, for two hours on a Wednesday evening, we can be children playing make-believe – inventing characters, immersing ourselves in a world of our imagination and interacting with others just as absorbed in that world as we are.

If this sounds like something that would appeal to you, there is still plenty of time to join the ensemble cast – or try out for a scripted role. You will find a warm welcome at the Amersham Market Hall, 7.30pm any Wednesday evening.

“A well-run, informative and interesting small museum on the main street. It’s mostly volunteer-run and they do a great job in keeping it and making you feel welcome…Check out the herb garden too.”

“Enjoyable film and television location guided walk around Amersham hosted by Amersham Museum – here are the Sun Houses on Highover Park and further up the hill is High & Over.”
