The scheme, first launched in 1978, recognises high-quality formal learning programmes that support the curriculum and informal learning such as family programmes and self-guided activities.Having reviewed the museum’s comprehensive application and spent a full day at the museum observing a school visit and meeting with staff and volunteers, Lead Assessor Helen Cook, concluded:
Amersham Museum offers an exciting learning programme rooted in the important history of this market town. The dynamic, interactive workshops are thoughtfully planned in collaboration with schools to meet curriculum and learning needs. The programme effectively engages pupils of all abilities with their local heritage using original artefacts and archive material from the collections. The 16th century building and garden provide an immersive setting to explore the town’s development in the object-rich galleries. The expert and friendly volunteer team is an asset to the professional museum service. The high-quality learning experience is valued by schools who return year on year to enjoy this treasured community resource.
Museum Learning Officer, Hailey Bickham, will receive the award, alongside this year’s other successful organisations, at a special ceremony at Kensington Palace in November.

We are delighted to receive national recognition for Amersham Museum’s learning programmes. Our inspiring on-site and outreach sessions for schools are continually popular across the age groups, and we love sharing our wonderful buildings, collections and local history with pupils and teachers. But what is even more special about this award is the recognition that our whole museum is focused on learning, with our year-round programme for children and families, and also our guided walks, exhibitions and talks, community events and visits, our website and publications, and our groups for the very young to the young-at-heart! This is at the core of what the whole museum team, paid and voluntary, work hard to deliver, so the award is a thank you to them all!
