| About this object | This is the first in a series of log books recording daily and weekly information regarding the operation of St Marys Church of England School Amersham, which was founded in 1873. It relates to the ‘boys’ department’. Between 1887 and 1918, St Mary’s Primary School closed ten times because of outbreaks of diseases including measles, mumps, influenza, scarlet fever and diphtheria. This page from the school log book shows that it was ordered to close on 14 December 1887 because of measles. It reopened 5 weeks later on 16 January 1888, although 23 of the 97 boys were still absent. A measles vaccine was not available until the 1960s, with the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine first introduced in 1971. |
| Physical Description | The log book is 23cm by 19cm. It is bound in dark brown canvas with black decorative edging and corners on the front and back covers. ‘Log Book’ is embossed in capital letters in gold on the front cover. The spine has a white sticker with blue edging with ‘Boys’ 1873 to 1896’ written on it in ink. Inside the book, each page is lined and handwritten in ink. The pages are numbered in the top outer corner on each page. There is a red vertical margin on every page. |
